Our Sencha Asanoka is a single cultivar fukamushi (deeply steamed) style Japanese green tea that is quite uncommon. The dry leaf has an exotic fragrance that is both herbaceous and fruity but not grassy. The aroma of the first infusion is quite complex in that it is sweet, but more like a sandalwood as opposed to fruit. The infusion is rich and creamy with a significant umami flavor and a slight astringency. Where this tea really shines is in the second infusion where the sweetness kicks in even more suggesting melon which remains in the lingering aftertaste with less astringency.
The Asanoka cultivar is relatively new. It was developed in 1996 in Kagushima prefecture from a cross between the Japanese Yabukita cultivar and the Chinese Hiramizu #1 cultivar.
If you are a Japanese tea enthusiast this really is a tea you should try!
