Shino Ware is one of many styles of Mino-Yaki, a kind of Japanese pottery that was produced in Mino Province around the towns of Toki, Minokamo and Tajimi in Gifu Prefecture. Dating from the 16th century, it is still sought after by modern tea practitioners for its characteristic thick milk-white glaze textured with small holes along with brushwork depictions of seasonal flora. As its name suggests, this design captures the cherry tree, sakura, in full bloom with delicate petals that nearly obscure the branches underneath.
A deep, cylindrically-shaped Matcha bowl, Chawan, helps in whisking by providing ample room for the whisk, Chasen, to move back and forth (the movement necessary to produce froth and dissolve the Matcha powder). Its robust shape also sits nicely in both hands. These Chawan are accompanied by a green paperboard gift box for storage.
