Our Blue Ru porcelain Teapot Set has a "duck egg blue" enameled surface that always appears to have complex cracks that suggest a spider web, fish scales or fine cracks in the ice. These cracks are not quite visible when the piece of ware is new but with repeated usage, tea becomes the patina agent that gives colour to the cracks to give you the similar visual effects on ancient pieces that you can see in museums. There are new products with imitation aged effects made with a different colour glaze on the cracks.
Ru Ware originated in China during the Song Dynasty. It was produced for the imperial court for a very brief perior around the year 1100. Fewer than 100 original pieces exist today, though there are many imitations. On 3 October 2017, a Ru ware brush-washer dish, 13 cm (5 in) across, set a new record auction price for Chinese ceramics at Sotheby's Hong Kong, fetching nearly US$38 million!
