Huangshan Maofeng tea is the most well-known alpine green tea in China. Translated "Yellow Mountain Fur Peak," Huangshan Maofeng tea has been produced in the Anhui province of China for over 400 years.
Huangshan Maofeng Tea is noted for its amazing orchid fragrance and fresh, sweet taste. The dried tea leaves are yellowish green with a slight upturn, and covered with tiny silvery hairs. In Chinese there is a saying: the first cup is most fragrant, the second sweetest and the third, strongest.
The Pre-Ming Fuxi Huangshan Maofeng shown here is grown at an elevation of over 800 meters, was totally hand made of tea leaves picked from wild tea trees of the Yellow Mountain about 15 days before Qing Ming (Early April). Fuxi Huangshan Maofeng is considered to be the very best. Fuxi is the name of the town where the tea originated
Ingredients: Artisan organic green tea
Origin: Fuxi Huangshan, Anhui Province, China
Huangshan Maofeng is one of the most famous teas in China and can almost always be found on the China Famous Tea List. The tea is grown near Huangshan (Yellow) Mountain, which is home to many famous varieties of Green Tea. There's an old Chinese saying "famous mountains produce famous tea". Huang Shan is one of China's famous mountains and Maofeng Green Tea produced there is certainly one of the best. Huangshan Maofeng Tea often serves as the Chinese National Gift Tea.
Huangshan Maofeng Tea's English translation is "Yellow Mountain Fur Peak" due to the small white hairs which cover the leaves and the shape of the processed leaves which resemble the peak of a mountain. The best teas are picked in the early Spring before China's Qingming (Pure Brightness) Festival. When picking the tea, only the new tea buds and the leaf next to the bud are picked. It is said by local tea farmers that the leaves resemble orchid buds.
Fuxi(富溪)is the name of the town in Huangshan where tea merchant Xie Zhengan invented Huangshan Maofeng during the Qing Dynasty. Xie Zhengan, a major tycoon of his time, was a tea master in his own right. Around 1875, he selected tea buds from Fuxi and started making Huangshan Maofeng. It was an instant success. He became the richest man in Huangshan and went on to own nine tea shops around China. Until now, Fuxi Huangshan Maofeng is considered to be the best of all the Huangshan Maofeng produced in different places of Huangshan. It has much more beautiful appearance and unique and lovely taste and flavor.
Brewing Instructions
Water Temperature: 155-175 degrees
Water Quality: Best with Spring Water
Amount of Leaf (per 6 fl oz water): 2 full Tbl. (5 grams)
Steep Time: 1-3 minutes
Number of Infusions: 3
I especially like using a high leaf to water ratio and steeping this tea with slightly cooler water. Our Pre-Ming Fuxi Huangshan Maofeng may be prepared in a standard teapot, or in your favorite mug or lidded gaiwan. For best results, we recommend that you pre-warm your vessel, and place 5 grams of leaf per 6 oz of liquid, before infusing with 155-175 degree water for up to 1-3 minutes. As with all green teas, Pre-Ming Fuxi Huangshan Maofeng can be infused at least three times. Increase the time and temperature slightly with each subsequent infusion. Experimenting with your own temperatures and steeping times is encouraged, especially with such a forgiving tea. Cooler temperatures and shorter times yield more mellow, fruity elements, while hotter water and longer times produce more floral and full-bodied complexities. Always use the best-tasting water you can find, and adjust steeping times, quantity of leaves, and water temperature to your personal preferences.
We highly recommend brewing your tea in a teapot or mug with a removable infuser so that you can remove the leaves at the end of the steeping time. Whole leaf teas of this quality need room to unfurl and expand in the water in order to perform their "magic." If you don't have a removable infuser, you can brew the loose leaves directly in the pot. At the end of the steeping time, pour all of the tea into a warm serving pitcher or pot.
